Have you ever looked into your wardrobe and wished you could start again? Dreamed that you could take every item and throw it out the window, then hit the shops with a high-limit credit card?
We grow, we change, yet we often hold on to clothing that really doesn’t make us feel good anymore – just because it seems like a waste to get rid of that perfectly functional jacket we paid way too much for.
So, we guilt-hoard.
I am reminded of an episode of Offspring, when Nina comes home to her loft apartment burning down. As she observes the smoke pouring from the windows she says “at least I can start over with my wardrobe…”.
As I get bored really easily, I am better off with less in my closet. That way, I can thrash it whilst I love it and then get rid of it as soon as my affection wanes. Hence why you will see pieces multiple times on this blog, worked a little differently – I’m thrashing.
I have been lured by the minimalist clothing idea many times. Purely because fashion is an expensive and fast-moving addiction. It is so tempting to have a wardrobe full of neutrals that all go together, in boxy cuts that were never really ‘in’ or ‘out’ of style.
But, I find that too boring. I love my statement pieces most of all.
Neutral isn’t the message I want to send to the world about who I am. I would prefer bold and fearless. That is the woman I am working on becoming, so my style should reflect that.
However, I think there is a formula to building a good capsule wardrobe and then adding to it each season with a couple of pieces that get your heart racing.
So that is what I intend to do. Build my basics, have the perfect outfit for all occasions and then add the special items in for fun and happiness.
Of course I will take you along with me. I will identify fun and transient trends, but I will also do a weekly post with a building block to add to your capsule wardrobe.
Looking forward to starting fresh – without the need to burn my apartment down….
