I am obsessed with live shows. Be it concerts, musicals, plays. This started when I was eight and Mum took me to Mary Poppins live at the Isaac Theatre Royal. Mary was flying on strings and got stuck in the curtain. Even at this young age I realised that a live show holds so much more excitement than TV. It is like real life – you can’t just do another take when things go wrong – you have to roll with it.
Since then I have seen Alice in Wonderland, Cats (although one of the cats licked my Magum ice cream), Hair, Les Miserables and last week I saw Phantom of the Opera in Christchurch. I get this weird reaction to shows – as soon as the music starts all my hairs stand up and I feel an electric buzz through my body. Apparently my face goes catatonic looking…
I have also been fortunate enough to get tickets to Ed Sheran and Rudimental in Auckland in December (my second time seeing Ed!) and I got to enjoy Ricky Martin shake his bon bon the other week. He was incredible! He wore this outrageous white outfit at one stage and looked like a gyrating Lego man! The whole show was so Latin and sexual. That afternoon I put my lower back out whilst planking – I was horrified. How do you go to a Ricky Martin concert and not move your hips! White wine to the rescue.
If anyone has the chance to see Phantom of the Opera, go. It is magnificent. Google tells me it is the longest running show in Broadway history. At the Christchurch show, the actor playing the Phantom (Chris Crowe) was so good, I cried for him as his heart broke – but the show stealer was definitely the actor playing Christine Daae (Daniela-Rosa Cepeda) – her voice was perfection.
Each time I see a live show I make a renewed promise to myself. Within my budget, I will make the effort to see every show I possibly can. They are my absolute happy place.
Much love XX
