SO YOU WERE CALLED A SLUT AT MCDONALD’S

FASHION-ITALY-MOSCHINO

I learn some very valuable lessons in some very unusual circumstances. One important realisation was made whilst waiting in line for a cheeseburger in a Brisbane McDonald’s.

A few years back, I had just watched the Red Hot Chilli Peppers play and after consuming a few too many beersies,  I desperately wanted a burger. As I made my way to the McDonald’s counter, I bumped into a girl that I used to go to primary school and high school with back in New Zealand. No huge surprise – swing a jandal in Brisbane and you’ll hit a kiwi.

We chatted excitedly for a moment and then her boyfriend turned around from ordering to face me. The big oaf leaned on the counter for support due to his level of intoxication.

“You remember Katie! She went to Rangiora!”

He swayed a little and took a closer look at me.

“Yeah I remember Katie Appleyard…she was a slut.”

….shocked silence.

What the fuck?!

I actually think I reeled back from the sheer blow of the slander.

He turned back around and left us in a very awkward situation as she quickly tried to change the subject.

I was still stunned as I exited the building with my friends, munching on a chicken nugget.

Did he actually just say that?!!

I had always been so careful. In high school, it was my biggest fear to be called that word. Whilst some of my peers were having a great ol’ time experimenting, I was such a good girl. And what a waste! I might as well have been boffing half of my class as my reputation was determined by a big drunken baboon anyway.

This was my first lesson that people will believe whatever they want to believe about you. And if you live your life worried about it, the only person who misses out is you.

Ok, judging by my high school sexual experiences, I don’t think I missed out on anything except maybe gonorrhea. But still.

Being concerned about someone else’s opinion is a waste of time. The world will judge you no matter what you do. So you might as well determine your own path, speak your mind and have some good old-fashioned fun.

“Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt

  1. You’ve had a tough time at takeaway shops…what about that girl at Burger King at the Mount who tried to hit you up whilst your ice-cream melted all over your hand!!
