This weeks look was modelled on Christchurch’s High Street. This street used to be the fashion hub of the central city. I will never forget the amazing vintage store full of pieces I was never brave enough to wear. Eighties bridesmaid dresses, cashmere coats and knee-high leather boots. Part of the charm of this street was the old architecture, leaving the area vulnerable during the 2011 earthquake. Most of the buildings and facades collapsed – except the featured brick wall and the old Alice in Videoland building. I shot the last photo in this sequence whilst waiting for Addeana to arrive – there was just something I loved about this wall.
One of my favourite parts of this new project is picking shoot locations around Christchurch. My poor photography students are so patient as I take them to some of the most broken and quiet parts of the city. Dodgy streets, rubble, weeds, graffiti – the rougher the better. I have no idea why, but it feels good to sift around in the cities underbelly. It is still magnificent.
When you take the time to really look, there is beauty in Christchurch’s broken heart.
Much love XX
